Supporting Childhood Cancer Research

DELAFIELD, WIGold In September (G9) is pleased to announce that 19 Classic 8 girls lacrosse teams representing 11 different programs, raised nearly $12,000 in support of childhood cancer research.

The initiative was spearheaded by Shelly Schumacher, the Mukwonago Girls Lacrosse head coach, who challenged cross-town rival Arrowhead, to a friendly competition to see who could raise more money for Gold In September, an organization that raises awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. “After I spoke with Tom Truttchel, the head coach of the Arrowhead program, I started thinking, ‘why should we stop with just two programs?’ I asked him what he thought about challenging the entire conference to take part in the initiative.” The result was 19 teams signing on to join the battle.

The competition started on April 15th and wrapped up on May 31. Teams came up with their own programs and events to raise funds over the course of the initiative. “It was fun to see the innovative ways funds were raised. Some teams had boys vs. girls’ events, others raised money at local eateries while others created an entire evening devoted to childhood cancer.

For their part, Gold In September was overflowing with gratitude for the girl’s efforts. “At G9 we truly believe that it takes a village to fund childhood cancer research. We are thankful that these 19 teams chose to join our village for the lacrosse vs. cancer initiative,” notes Sarah Bartosz, President of Gold In September. “$12,000 is an amazing donation towards our efforts here at G9. Every donation helps us move towards our vision of a world where every child, everywhere survives cancer,” she adds.

The teams that were involved in the initiative include Arrowhead Red (JV/Varsity), Arrowhead White (JV/Varsity), Waukesha (JV/Varsity), Kenosha (JV/Varsity), Cedarburg (Varsity), Mukwonago (Varsity), Sussex (JV/Varsity), Homestead (JV/Varsity), Franklin (Varsity), Wauwatosa (JV/Varsity), Oconomowoc (Varsity) and Kettle Moraine (JV/Varsity).
